Mad Mex pledges 80,000 burritos if runners break records in fun run

The burritos will be given to all entrants in the marathon.

Mexican chain Mad Mex will give the 80,000 entrants of the 2023 City2Surf fun run a burrito each if anyone breaks the male, female, or elite wheelchair record on 13 August.

The men’s running record, set by Steve Moneghetti in 1991, currently stands at 40.03. In 2019, Australian runner Harry Summer fell just two seconds short of the record, finishing in 40.05. The women’s running record is 45.08, set by Susie Power in 2001. The elite wheelchair race record is 33.22, set by Kurt Fearnley in 2016.

As it does every year, the big race will start just up the road from Mad Mex’s Crown Street restaurant, which, when it opened in 2007, was the first Mad Mex in Australia. Staff will be cheering entrants on and getting ready for a busy afternoon if a record is toppled.

City2Surf is a popular road running event held annually in Sydney.

The offer to shout every entrant a burrito in the wake of a record-breaking performance on Sunday is designed to draw attention to Mad Mex’s belief that fast food should be better, that simple is good, and fresh is best. 

According to Mad Mex, if someone manages to beat a record, this will become the biggest burrito giveaway in history.

“With this challenge, we’re both throwing down the gauntlet and showing our support for outstanding performance on the line. If a record’s broken on Sunday, it’ll cost us…but we’re putting our burrito where our mouth is,” Mad Mex founder Clovis Young said.
