Gami Chicken credits chip design for cult following across Australia
Chips ranked second among 18 Australian fast-food chains.
Gami Chicken credited its unique way of cooking its chips following its ranking as the second best tasting chips in Australia in a national publication.
According to the Korean fast-dining chain, it had a surge in attention after its chips ranked second in a comparison of 18 major Australian fast-food franchises.
The chips are double-fried, finger-thick, and coated in a light batter designed to maintain crunch whilst retaining potato flavour. The item is also the most frequently ordered side with the brand’s fried chicken, with the company reporting approximately 20 tonnes served nationally over the past 12 months.
Jun Lee, founder of Gami Chicken, said the chips were developed to replicate the crispness associated with the chain’s chicken. “To achieve this, the batter was developed with the goal of creating a chip that is crispy on the outside while still allowing the potato flavour to come through on the inside,” he said.
The chain also said the size and thickness were intentionally designed to maintain texture after frying. Lee said the product was inspired by Korean street-food techniques that prioritise crispiness and contrast, with the aim of positioning chips as a standalone menu item rather than a traditional side.
Founded in 2006 by four students at Monash University, Gami Chicken has grown from a single Melbourne laneway restaurant to more than 20 locations across Australia. The company said it plans to continue expanding whilst maintaining its Korean-inspired menu.
