Sumo Salad Slams NSW Food Labeling Legislation as “Impractical, problematic and cumbersome legislation"

Talking exclusively to QSR Media Luke Baylis, MD, Sumo Salad gave his overall negative opinion of “Impractical, problematic and cumbersome legislation” the NSW government passed last year.

The legislation stipulates that the Kilojoule reading needs to be the same size as the food item on the menu board. It applies to any chain with 20 or more stores in NSW.

For his part he will be delaying the implementation until the last possible day.

While not wanting to name anyone specifically Baylis says this sentiment is typical amongst his colleagues in the industry. His biggest criticism of the legislation is that it KJ are only a small aspect of the overall better health message. Fat and sodium content are just as, if not more, important. By focusing on KJ you are giving a false perception of health to the consumer.

Baylis is also critical of the approach the previous Labor Government took and the lack of consultation with the wider QSR industry. Baylis commented “KFC opinion is going to be different to Sumo Salad particularly how they communicate messages to customers” he went on to comment “we should have had an opportunity to influence decisions and be part of a balanced perspective”.
