Which Australian cities have the most affordable coffee?

High-income countries often have the cheapest coffees.

Sydney ranks number one out of the four cities in Australia that made it to the top 20 list of the most affordable coffees in the world.

In a report by international food magazine Chef’s Pencil, it found that coffee is most affordable in high-income countries, where wages significantly outpace beverage prices.

However, cultural norms also play a major role in coffee affordability. For example, Italy doesn’t have the highest wages in the world, but its strong café culture keeps prices low and daily coffee highly accessible.

The list used the reported average price of a cappuccino or similar coffee and expressed it as a share of local monthly wages.

Out of the top 20 cities with the most affordable coffee, Sydney ranks 8th, with daily coffee costing 2.6% of the average monthly salary. 10th is Melbourne and 11th is Brisbane at 2.7% followed by Perth at 13th at 2.8%.

Geneva, Switzerland, is the number one city in the world where coffee is cheapest relative to the average monthly salary.

Sourcing data from crowdsourced platform and online database Numbeo, Chef’s Pencil analysed data across 180 cities.
