Average Aussie eats 49 kilograms of chicken a year, study says
This is twice as much chicken as beef and pork, and six times more than lamb.
Australians are the largest per capita consumers of chicken globally, only behind Hong Kong, Malaysia and Qatar.
According to Craveable Brands’s ‘Chicken Is King’ report, the average Aussie now eats 49 kilograms of chicken each year. This particular amount is twice as much chicken as beef and pork, and six times more than lamb.
The report, which surveyed 1,000 Australians, revealed that chicken remains the most affordable protein for Aussie families.
“The price of chicken has been getting more affordable whilst other meats are becoming out of reach – between 1994 and 2017 chicken prices increased by only 26% whilst lamb increased by 162% and beef by 93%” Craveable Brands CEO Brett Houldin said in a media release.

Almost 7 out of 10 (69%) Aussies prefer to eat their chicken at the dinner table. Queenslanders are most likely to prefer roasted chicken, Victorians prefer chicken breasts whilst people from NSW are most likely to eat their chicken barbequed and prefer thighs and wings.
Persons most likely to prefer barbequed chicken is a man from New South Wales in his 20s, those likely to eat chicken at least twice per week is a Victorian woman in her 50s, and those most likely to prefer the chicken breast is a West Australian man in his 20s.
An ACT woman in her 20s is the likely person to eat chicken daily, eating chicken at the dinner table is most common for a Northern Territory man in his 70s. Those who are most likely to break the wishbone is a South Australian woman in her 50s and those who likely eat chicken on the couch at home is a Tasmanian woman in her 50s.
