Subway Australia to use locally-sourced marinara sauce
Tomatoes grown in Echuca, Victoria will be used to make the chain’s marinara sauce from April 2018.
It appointed local Echuca business Kagome Australia as the supplier of marinara sauce in Australia. With the new business in Echuca, roughly 3.5 million kilograms of 100% Australian grown tomatoes will be used to make the marinara sauce every year.
In a statement, Subway Australia said it's proud to live by its commitment to supply the freshest, locally sourced ingredients available with the Kagome supply.
Subway's senior manager of corporate social responsibility Ben Miles said it is exciting to know that one of the brand’s signature menu items will be grown just down the road from the local Echuca Subway shop. “The tomato marinara sauce, used in our Meatball, Pizza and Chicken Parmigiana subs, will have the same delicious taste and recipe that it’s always had, but will be grown a lot closer to home."
Mitch Austin, foodservices sales manager at Kagome Australia, added that having Subway Australia as a partner marks a significant milestone for its business - meaning more job security for their 250 workers, along with being able to develop new technology to improve overall quality of their produce.
“We are proud to now supply our local Subway restaurant, and restaurants around the country, with marinara sauce made with tomatoes that are sustainably grown by farmers who live in Australia, and eat at Subway.” said Austin.
