Subway Surf Series kicks off on Sunshine Coast
The 10-event series returned for its second year, featuring seven qualifying Subway Pro-Juniors, sanctioned by the World Surf League (WSL).
The Subway Pro Junior events, which includes 18 and under boys and girls divisions, form part of the 2016 WSL Australasian Junior Qualifying Series (JQS), providing the winning athletes with an opportunity to win a coveted world title, at the WSL World Junior Championships in early 2017.
Surfing Queensland CEO Adam Yates said that he was thrilled the Sunshine Coast was hosting the first event of the Subway Surf Series and is looking forward to seeing locals showcase their talents.
“The Subway Surf Series is such a fantastic platform to foster junior surfing talent in Australia and the new association with the WSL makes it a truly elite competition. The local Sunshine Coast surfing community is really excited to participate in this year’s series,” Yates said.
Leading the way in the 18 and under boys’ division this weekend will be Kyuss King (Byron Bay) and Aaron Kelly (Sunshine Beach), while Laura Poncini (Caloundra), Zahli Kelly (Casuarina) and Holly-Daze Coffey (Coolangatta) will be the ones to watch in the 18 and under girls’ division.
In the 16 and under boys’ division, Caloundra’s Luke Glover, Micah Margieson, Hinata Aizawa (Palm Beach) will be frontrunners, while Coolangatta’s Piper Harrison is in the 16 and under girls’ division.
The winners of the three non-qualifying events, catering to both 18 and under and 16 and under girls’ and boys’ divisions, will attend a Subway Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre at Casuarina.
The main base for tournament is Coolum with backup locations at Peregian Beach, Sunshine Beach, Ann Street Reef at Dicky’s Beach, Kawana S Bends and Alexandra Headlands.
