Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses, Victorian bakers rally against supermarkets
The bakers are taking a stand against Coles and Woolworths selling Hot Cross Buns too soon after Christmas by hosting a peaceful rally on the steps of the State Library of Victoria on Monday 21 December 2015.
Last month Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses CEO Steve Plarre sent an open letter to the heads of Coles and Woolworths pleading that they help keep Easter special by selling Hot Cross Buns six weeks before Easter. After not receiving a response, bakers from across the state will gather to host the rally.
“It’s a real shame that we need to take to the streets to be heard on this matter. Bakers across Australia agree that the supermarkets are stretching their promotions beyond what’s considered reasonable. This is about family values being honored to keep Easter special,” Plarre said.
In support of the rally, some bakeries will sell “Not Cross Buns” prior to Easter. Profits will go to the Starlight Foundation in an effort to grant wishes for sick children.
According to Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses, backing their appeal to the supermarkets are the Australia’s National Baking Industry Association & the Baking Association of Australia, as well as international celebrity baker Dean Brettschneider, Phillippa’s Bakery, Bakers Delight, Beechworth Bakery, executive pastry chef Pierrick Boyer of Le Petite Gateaux and Stéphane Bordes of Noisette Boulangerie.
