Below is a Q&A with James Barritt, Executive Director of Zarraffa’s Coffee.
QSR Media: Tell us more about the drive thru model of the brand.
Barritt: Drive thrus will form a larger part of our operations as Zarraffa’s looks to meet demand from both franchisees and customers.
As a company we have invested considerable time and money in fine tuning the backend of our operations as a way to create the optimum drive thru coffee experience and customers are responding favourably.
QSR Media: What kind of volume are you getting from this?
Barritt: The drive thrus are effectively like ‘bolting on’ a second store to our sites, allowing service of two sets of customers from the same location. The added convenience to commuter traffic ensures that our drive thru stores are well patronised across the day.
QSR Media: What were the challenges faced during the expansion of the store?
Barritt: Ironically it’s changing the habits of our customers, especially in an established traditional dine in store location. The Upper Coomera franchisees noted that some of their regular customers have driven to the store for a takeaway coffee but would walk in store to get it.
The franchisees, who also own another drive thru store at Riverlakes and understand these nuances, know from experience that convenience will solve this issue as more customers looking for a ‘coffee-to-go’ will start using the drive thru facility.
QSR Media: Any other comments?
Barritt: While the store was still under construction, a queue of cars was found in the drive thru, which goes to show good convenient coffee is always in demand.
