Proposed legislation to tackle obesity

The Prime Minister Julia Gillard has ruled out a 10% taxation on fast food, which was a potential outcome of a health review that had taken place by the previous Rudd Labor government.

Of interest to the QSR Industry however is the Gillard Government's plan to establish an "Australian National Preventative Health Agency" to fight obesity and other preventable health diseases. This proposed agency will run national social marketing program relating to obesity and tobacco ($102 million over 4 years).

The new National Preventative Health Agency will advise all Health Ministers and help coordinate prevention campaigns across the country.

These initiatives are all part of the Australian National Preventive Health Agency Bill 2010 which is currently before parliament.
