NPD research looks into the importance of family to the foodservice biz
Research done by the NPD Group showed that after almost three years of easing up on restaurant visits, Aussie families are making their way back to the table.
According to the research, for the first time in more than two years, adult-only parties' visits are declining, while parties with kids are growing, with two quarters' growth of 2% YE September 2015. Full service restaurants led the gains in family visits, with 5% traffic growth YE September 2015. Quick service saw more family visits for lunch and snacks.
Families are also found to be choosing healthier options for kids with each visit, with the Top 3 growing menu items to be chicken burger, bread, and frozen drinks/smoothie. Declining items are regular cola, juice, and chips/fries.
The research found that families also opted for QSR cafes for morning meals, QSR burgers and sandwiches for lunch, FSR for dinner, and retail for P.M. snacks.
"How will you keep the momentum going in 2016? Highlight fun, nourishing, and family-friendly meals. Be the fun destination they're looking for, particularly on the weekend, and offer healthier, innovative, kid-oriented foods and beverages. Consider family offers, which tend to trigger visits," NPD said.
