Below is a Q&A with Tony Melham, El Presidente of the Coco Cubano franchise.
QSR Media: What’s interesting about the new menu?
Melham: There is now much more variety across all sections of the menu, and it draws on the delicious flavours of Carribean, offering the customer better choice and a more authentic Cuban experience. Some of our favourite new Cuban dishes include Breakfast Bruschetta, Smoky Pork or Chicken Burrito and Mini Quesadillas.
For us, the new drinks menu is the standout. We now have an extensive range of over 9 Latino wines and a new Caribbean Rum menu with over 6 different varieties available. On the cocktail front, the new menu boasts over 50 different cocktails categorised by 10 different ranges including Classic Cubano Cocktails, Specialty Mojitos, Frozen Signature Cocktails and Vintage Cocktails.
QSR Media: What pushed the brand to revamp its food and drinks offering?
Melham: To date, this is the most extensive menu revamp we’ve had, but as an innovative and adaptable brand we continuously tweak and change our menu to keep up with customer feedback and food trends.
The rising popularity of ‘mini’ foods has been incorporated in the Coco Cubano tapas menu with new mini additions including Mini Pork or Chicken Sliders, Mini Quesadillas and Mini Pork or Chicken Tacos.
We’ve also been more creative with our cocktail menu, showcasing some of the best Cuban cocktails in Sydney from the Macho Man to our Classic Cubano Cadillac.
QSR Media: How has the response been from your customers on the new products?
Melham: The new wine menu has been particularly well received by locals. There are now over 15 different bottled varieties of wine and plenty more options available by the glass. The wines have been sourced from across Latin America including Argentina and Spain with a highlight being the La Vuelta range from Mendoza, Argentina.
The wider overall menu has something on offer for everyone. We’ve seen families sitting down for breakfast, large group lunches between friends and couples sharing intimate dessert dates, all enjoying the variety the menu now has to offer.
QSR Media: You mentioned over 50 new cocktails and several new rums and wines, how do you promote this?
Melham: Currently, Coco Cubano offers a Sunset Session where locals can enjoy Tapas, Nachos, beer and wines at special reduced prices every Monday to Thursday from 5 – 7 pm. Cocktails have now been included in the Sunset Session and can be enjoyed for only $9.90, instead of their usual $14.90. Coco Cubano’s Sunday Sunset Special offers Sangria jugs for $19 and Cocktail jugs for $29 all day every Sunday.
QSR Media: What else can we expect from Coco Cubano this year?
Melham: We’re rolling out the new menu across all our current stores and focusing on expanding the franchise in the Australian market, with five new stores set to open between now and December. The first of these will be the store at the University of NSW campus in Kensington, store opening later in June, followed by Macarthur, Central Park in Sydney’s CBD, Blacktown and Top Ryde Shopping Center.
