National finals of Hudsons Coffee Barista Competition to be held in Melbourne
The top three baristas must prepare 12 beverages in 15 minutes to vie for the title of Hudsons' best barista.
It will be a battle of the beans when Australia’s coffee capital, Melbourne, plays host to the National final of the 2011 Hudsons Coffee Barista Competition tomorrow, Thursday 21 September 2011, from 11am under the Melbourne Central Clock.
The crema of the Hudsons Coffee crop will put their coffee skills on show for a panel of judges and the chance to take home some steaming hot prizes, including a trip for two to Rome, Italy the heartland of coffee and a trip for two to tropical Queensland to the Skybury Estate Coffee plantation.
Hosted by renowned coffee expert and internationally respected barista, David Makin of Axil Coffee, the National Final will see qualifying finalists from across Australia compete in two competitions designed to serve up Hudsons Coffee’s best barista and barista team.
The Hudsons Cup will see the top three individual Hudsons Coffee baristas prepare 12 beverages in 15 minutes – four Espressos, four Cappuccinos and four individual ‘signature beverages’ which will be assessed on taste, presentation, technical skills and cleanliness.
The Bean Team offers Hudsons Coffee baristas the chance to battle it out in pairs. The top three teams will each need to produce 12 beverages in 12 minutes – four cappuccinos, four piccolos and four designer lattes which will also be assessed on taste, presentation, technical skills and cleanliness.
Making quality coffee is serious business for Hudsons Coffee – the National Barista Competition is an annual event, spanning three months across six states. Heats have been held across the country since July to find the top-performing National Finalists.
Conceived in 2008, the competition recognises and rewards the company’s best baristas, and encourages all staff to reach for the top… and the tamper! Competitors are assessed by a team of judges and rewarded at store, regional and national level.
Hudsons Coffee knows that coffee quality is reliant on two things – beans and baristas. The company is dedicated to ensuring each and every one of its 65 stores across Australia consistently delivers the same honest cup that Hudsons Coffee customers have come to know and love.
