YUM targets to raise $27m this year to fight world hunger

YUM Australia has raised over $3 million for the World Food Programme to date.

This September, YUM is partnering with the UN World Food Programme for the fifth consecutive year. The Programme raises money to fight world hunger, which kills more people every year than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.

This year, with the support of campaign ambassador Christina Aguilera, YUM is aiming to raise over $27 million internationally for the cause.

Australians are encouraged to play their part by making a donation at their local KFC and Pizza Hut stores throughout September. As a show of appreciation, KFC has committed to topping up the donation of the store which raises the most money in each state with an extra $2,000.

KFC Managing Director, Tony Lowings said, “This is a great global initiative which KFC Australia is proud to support. We live in one of the most generous nations in the world and each year, local communities help their local KFC stores to raise funds for this worthy cause.”

To date, YUM Australia has raised over $3 million for the World Food Programme. Internationally, YUM has raised over US$85 million and provided more than 350 million meals to those in urgent need of food assistance.

“Our success comes from the motivation of our 30,000 strong YUM community and their passion to fight hunger. This is an ongoing issue globally and in 2011, we believe we will be even more successful than ever before with the support of our staff, customers and communities across our network of 800 stores,” said Mr Lowings.

World Hunger Relief global ambassador , Christina Aguilera encourages everyone to get involved, “As a mother, the idea that even one child could go to bed hungry is unacceptable and that’s why I’m so passionate about fighting global hunger,” she said.

The World Food Programme (WFP), the world’s largest humanitarian agency, will use the much needed funds raised this year by World Hunger Relief to support food aid programs in the least developed nations around the world. Each year, the WFP feeds an average of 90 million people in more than 70 countries.
