Below is a Q&A with Valerie Kubizniak, KFC Spokesperson.
QSR Media: Pies on the menu at KFC, what were some logistic challenges that were involved in the creation and execution of this menu?
Kubizniak: One of the main challenges was finding a supplier to help create a crispy, golden pastry that would live up to our commitment to bring great-tasting food to our customers.
We also had to ensure that our KFC Cooks were trained to bake the Zinger Pie to perfection, bringing out the flavour and spice of our Zinger chicken in a typical in-store environment.
QSR Media: Customer response so far, how would you describe it?
Kubizniak: We’ve had an overwhelmingly positive response to the Zinger Pie. We launched the Zinger Pie to six stores exclusively on Saturday 7th September, giving the loyal customers in these regions an exclusive first taste.
At KFC Minchinbury, we had customers lining up at the store from 8.30am to get a taste of the Zinger Pie. By 1pm, we had completely sold out.
Now that the Zinger Pie has been launched nationally, we’ve had rave reviews about the product with many consumers telling us to keep the Zinger pie on our menus permanently!
QSR Media: What are your promotional plans for the Zinger Pie?
Kubizniak: Promotion of the Zinger Pie is part of our broader Say It With Chicken campaign, for which we have partnered with Nova FM radio duo Fitzy and Wippa for an integrated broadcast and digital promotion.
In partnership with Channel 9, we organised for the 2013 Big Brother contestants to try the Zinger Pie first on national TV, during the Friday 6th September program.
The Zinger Pie campaign is supported by a range of traditional and digital media including Facebook as well as in-store promotions.
QSR Media: What advice would you give some of the smaller QSR's in the industry if they want to launch an LTO?
Kubizniak: Ensuring you have a winning product that will delight your customers is ultimately the most important factor when launching an LTO.
Ahead of launch, your product should be tested with your target consumers for quality, taste and value.
Finally, make sure your employees are trained to replicate the product in-store – if they can’t re-create your product in a natural in-store environment, then the product won’t hold up for your customers.
QSR Media: Any other comments?
Kubizniak: Our customers fell in love with the Zinger Pie when we tested it earlier this year. At KFC, we’re continuing to innovate and develop exciting new menu options to suit the tastes of Aussies, bringing exclusive tasty products like the Zinger Pie to the two million customers we serve each week.
