Noodle Box chef's recipe scoops up a win
Tasmanian Noodle Box chef, Tim Gao has scooped the top prize in an annual recipe competition with his interpretation of a popular Japanese chicken dish.
His chicken dish will now be available at Noodle Box restaurants across the country, as a special promotion and for a limited time only.
According to the chain, small tender pieces of chicken thigh meat are prepared with a range of specific herbs and lightly battered. They are wok-tossed till crisp, and served hot, preferably on a bed of fried rice. Traditionally named Karaage or Tatsutaage, the tasty and quick dish is a popular Japanese street food that Tim helped the Australian-owned Noodle Box restaurant chain modify for the Australian palate.
“This dish is popular in Japan and it tastes really good. It was probably the first one that came to mind for me, and I was careful to keep it a secret from other chefs who were also entering the competition,” said Gao. “The other chefs pretended that they weren’t interested in winning the competition, but I know they were all preparing their recipes too.”
