Mad Mex Big Burrito challenge has Aussies doubling up appetite
In commemoration of the Cinco de Mayo holiday on 5 May, Mad Mex’ month-long burrito challenge engaged men and women alike to eat their way through more than 2,000* of the 1KG burritos.
“It’s fantastic to see how popular and how much excitement the Big Burrito Challenge has created with our customers,” says Mad Mex Founder, Clovis Young. “The level of activity on Twitter, Facebook pages, and in blogs has exceeded our expectation and certainly the sheer number of customers that have taken the challenge has exceeded our forecasts. The challengers have made this competition their own, some competing against their mates to finish it first while others have refused to give up until they’d polished it off, no matter how long it took. And it’s not just the guys successfully rising to the challenge, we’ve seen a lot of young women come in and match the guys in their efforts.”
From the time the challenge appeared on menu boards at the beginning of the month, the brand’s social media sites were flooded with photos of people showing their Big Burrito feats and tweets of their achievements. Mad Mex’ Facebook page has an online Hall of Fame album where participants happily posted photos and commented on each other’s accomplishments. Successful challengers are given a special-edition t-shirt to boost their bragging rights.
The demand for the Big Burrito has seen long queues of eager participants who want to take a shot at the challenge. One tweet of the photo showing the long line in Sydney’s Circular Quay store snaking half the length of the shopping centre was posted online last week.
