McDonald's: Staff in restaurants given breaks “as required”

The statement was issued in response to employees being warned by a store manager against exercising their right to paid 10-minute breaks.

McDonald’s has issued a statement in response to reports about employees who were warned in social media that they will never be able to use the bathroom on shifts under new rules.

“Everyone who works in our restaurants is given breaks as required. McDonald’s works closely with our restaurants to ensure all our employees receive the correct entitlements and pay,” a McDonald’s spokesperson said.

“Any McDonald’s employee who has a query or concern regarding their employment conditions is able to contact us through our dedicated employee assistance hotline. This allows us to work with restaurants to ensure any issues are addressed,” the statement added.

The scathing Facebook post was written by a store manager hired by Tantex Holdings, a McDonald’s franchisee in Queensland.

“If you work longer than four hours, you become eligible for a 10 minute break...so for majority of crew you actually probably don’t ever qualify for a 10 minute break,” the manager wrote.

The post prompted outcry from union groups, including the Retail and Fast Food Workers Union (RAFFWU), who quickly protested against the fast food giant in Brisbane.
