184 cafes openings offset by 207 closures: report

Net change of openings and closing was at 23.

There were 207 closures and 184 openings in the last 12 months to 1 July 2023 according to  GapMap’s Retail Network Report for Australia’s Café Sector. 

This was a net drop of 23, a jarring difference between a net growth of 61 in last year’s report. The report tracked 19 cafe brands in Australia.

Leading the store openings by net change is Gong cha (23), followed by Chatime (18), Boost Juice (17) and Starbucks (8).

The brands with the most cafe openings are Gong cha and Chatime (30), Sharetea (19), Boost Juice (17), and McCafe. Meanwhile, the brands that closed the most stores are Gloria Jean’s (25), The Coffee Club, (21) Muffin Break and Top Juice (20), and Jamaica Blue (15).

Only Boost Juice did not close any cafes during the year.
