Product of the month - LOTF Sustainable Burger
Sam Koronczyk LOTF co-founder reveals how being environmentally conscious pays dividends.
QSR Media: Tell us the thinking behind the Eco City Burger?
Sam: The Eco City Burger is the official burger of the Sustainable Living Festival (February 9th- February 24th).
Lord of the Fries (LOTF) has sourced almost all of the ingredients in this eco-friendly and delicious burger locally from within Victoria. Not to mention the burger is 100 per cent vegetarian.
A vegetarian burger like the Eco City Burger has a much smaller eco footprint and produces significantly less carbon emissions than a meat burger when considering the origin of the product to the plate. It’s been estimated that a switch to eating vegetarian burgers instead of meat burgers could result in a 27 per cent decrease in greenhouse gas emissions per year[2].
This eco-happy burger consists of aioli, pickles, lettuce, onion, vegetarian mozzarella cheese, tomato if you want and the Lord of the Fries ‘beef’ patty and is topped off with their Sauce of the Month: “Darwin Sauce”, made of delectable beetroot its namesake coming from the most sustainable city in Australia[1].
QSR Media: How is it performing sales wise?
Sam: The burger was only launched on Monday so its early days but we envision it will be popular.
QSR Media: How long will it be on sale for?
Sam: The burger is limited edition for February and March only.
QSR Media: What kind of promotional activities are planned for it?
Sam: We are running a competition on social media whereby if customers send us a photo of themselves eating the Eco burger they can win tickets to the Sustainable Festival, which is holding over 300 events in Victoria. https://festival.slf.org.au/
QSR Media: Any other comments
Sam: “The nature of our business lends itself to sustainability and this is nothing new for us. We are not taxing the planet as much as most other restaurants because we source local and serve 100 per cent vegetarian food, with vegan options as well.”
“We were excited to be approached by the Sustainable Living Festival to create the official Eco City Burger for the event. Being kind to the earth, animals and serving great burgers and chips is what our business was founded on and it’s always great to partner with organisations that share our passion for great food.”
Operating sustainably is no joke to Lord of the Fries whose staple chips are produced from local Victorian-grown potatoes and delivered to the LOTF locations in trucks fuelled by the recycled oil that was used to fry the chips.
The business’ mission to minimise their eco footprint and make the world a better place exists throughout; from the food to promotional items produced on 100 per cent recycled paper and supporting like-minded charities like Wildlife Victoria, Edgar’s Mission and the Sea Sheppard.
