New law to require display of kilojoule information
Starting February 1, all major fast food retailers in New South Wales must display kilojoule information as the Government aims to improve health and reduce obesity across the State.
Fast food, bakery, coffee and doughnut chains with 20 or more stores in NSW or 50 or more stores nationally will be required to clearly and legibly place the kilojoule content on their menu board adjacent to the price of the product.
The kilojoule information must at least be the same size as the price of the product, and the average adult daily energy intake of 8700kj should also be prominently featured.
“This is a responsible approach to healthy living. It’s clear that people want to make an informed choice about their food,” said Premier Kristina Keneally.
The fast food labelling to be implemented in NSW come February 2011 is a first for Australia.
