Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses celebrates 115 years
Established in 1901, the bakery chain today commemorated 115 years of operation aiming to help Victorians to celebrate their most important life moments. The bakery now has 62 stores around the state.
The Plarre family, including fifth generation Elizabeth, aged four, blew out the birthday candles with Lord Mayor Robert Doyle at the Queen Victoria Market.
Chief Executive Officer and fourth generation baker Steve Plarre – who started helping his father, Ralph, stick strawberries onto cream cakes when he was just eight – says his team never take their history for granted.
“Customers often remind us that Ferguson Plarre has been at the centre of families’ most emotionally-charged moments for generations – helping them celebrate birthdays, weddings and anniversaries,” Plarre said.
“I’ve had people tell me they still have the top tier of their mum’s Ferguson Plarre wedding cake in the freezer, or that their fondest childhood memory was going with grandma to buy a Tiddly Oggie (pastie) at the Victoria Market in the 1940s.”
The Ferguson and Plarre families joined forces in 1980.
To mark this milestone, one lucky customer will win a Ferguson Plarre birthday cake each year for the rest of their life.
“With our long history, we are confident that a one-year-old winner will be getting their Ferguson Plarre birthday cake when they turn 100,” Plarre said.
