Subway responds to article on World Sandwich Day giveaways
Franchisees reportedly pleaded with the chain to stop the giveaway due to high costs.
Subway has disputed an article from the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age that detailed “struggling” franchisees revolting “over the high cost” of its World Sandwich Day promotion.
“Rather than providing both a free meal for guests and a meal to charity, we’re investing all our efforts into raising funds for Foodbank,” a spokesperson for chain said in a statement.
The World Sandwich Day promotion has run for several years and saw customers avail its buy-one-get-one-free promotion. The aforementioned report, however, said that franchisees “pleaded with Subway to stop the giveaway because of the impact on their already battered bottom line.”
Subway told QSR Media that they have “changed their focus” this year, with World Sandwich Day now being “all about the good deed feed.”
“World Sandwich Day is a great way to invite Australians to take a fresh look at the exciting changes we’re making Subway, while at the same time supporting franchise owner profitability and local communities. Subway remains committed to franchise owner profitability and serving up great-quality fresh food to Australians – every day of the year,” the statement continued.
