Zambrero to donate 500,000 meals for Meal Packing Day
With over 17 million meals donated to date, the brand is aiming to provide one billion meals by 2025.
The annual event, which will be held on 20th October this year, will see nearly two thousand volunteers across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth come together to pack nutritious meals for those in need.
With every burrito or bowl sold at any of the restaurants, Zambrero donates a plate of food to someone in need in the developing world. Meals, just like those packed on Meal Packing Day, consist of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables, and a fortified vitamin/mineral mix specially designed to supplement the diet of malnourished individuals.
As part of the Plate 4 Plate initiative, over 17 million meals have been donated to date and Zambrero aims to donate one billion by 2025. Working closely with international food charity, Rise Against Hunger to coordinate the community events, the food packs compiled in Australia this year will be donated to people in need in Madagascar and East Timor.
Zambrero aims to donate half a million meals on the day through the double donations and meal packing, an ambitious increase from the 353,379 meals donated in 2016.
For every burrito or bowl sold on 20th October, Zambrero will double the donation. In addition, for every retail product sold, two meals will be donated to people in need in underprivileged Australian communities - double the usual amount.
Zambrero's founder Sam Prince said, “We shouldn’t underestimate how one simple, local act can have an incredible impact on someone elsewhere in the world. I urge you to grab your friends or colleagues on the 20th October and visit a restaurant for one of our burritos or bowls and join us in ending world hunger, one mission at a time.”
Rise Against Hunger's president and CEO Rod Brooks said, "At the heart of Zambrero's mission to help end hunger is a commitment to ensuring that every child has the same opportunity to succeed. For this to happen, it's critical to provide nourishing meals. Zambrero, by engaging its employees and customers, is putting its values to work and making a significant difference in fighting hunger around the world."
Zambrero's CEO Karim Messih said, “Australians have been integral to the success of our donations so far. Nothing rivals that incredible feeling of helping another human being, so grab a burrito or bowl at your local Zambrero on Friday, 20th October to help feed two people in need.”
