Pizza, burgers, chicken to perform ahead of industry in 2021, NPD Group predicts

Recovery will depend on consumer confidence, the insights agency said.

Pizza, burgers and chicken are set to perform ahead of the QSR industry this year, as restrictions continue to ease and consumers regain confidence in on-premise dining.

The NPD Group predicts the three categories to recover better as they cater well to workers gradually returning to the workplace, whilst being less reliant on restaurant service and
capacity limitations.

Pizza, in particular, was noted for its relative success, backed by the rise of the in-home dining occasion.

In contrast, NPD predicts the café and coffee channel to take longer to recover, and is envisaged to continue its decline of over -2% in spend by end-2021. The sandwich category is also expected to take longer to recover.

Full-service restaurants had been declining pre-COVID for a number of years and had borne the brunt of the pandemic. NPD said his channel is set to continue its decline by the end of this year.

Overall, NPD said recovery will depend on consumer confidence as restrictions continue to ease and whether habits formed in lockdown stick despite venues opening up more for dining in.
