In contrast, NPD predicts the café and coffee channel to take longer to recover, and is envisaged to continue its decline of over -2% in spend by end-2021. The sandwich category is also expected to take longer to recover.
Full-service restaurants had been declining pre-COVID for a number of years and had borne the brunt of the pandemic. NPD said his channel is set to continue its decline by the end of this year.
Overall, NPD said recovery will depend on consumer confidence as restrictions continue to ease and whether habits formed in lockdown stick despite venues opening up more for dining in.
