Zambrero packs more than a quarter million meals to help fight world hunger

Volunteers helped the brand pack 353,376 meals to donate.

Over 1,500 volunteers across five states in Australia attended Zambrero’s Plate 4 Plate Meal Packing Event, Friday 21st October to pack meals for those facing habitual food insecurity.

The Plate 4 Plate Meal Packing Event takes place annually with last year packing 319,248 meals. This year, volunteer venues were heavily oversubscribed and with an incredible turn out on the day in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne, the brand accomplished packing 353,376 meals for donation.

At every Zambrero restaurant, all year around, Zambrero donates meals to those in need and less fortunate through their Plate 4 Plate initiative. It was created by founder Dr Sam Prince, and works on the concept of donating a nutritious meal to someone or families in need. A meal is donated with the help of Zambrero’s customers for every burrito or bowl purchased at a Zambrero restaurant.

It is these meals that were packed by volunteers at the recent Meal Packing Event and will be distributed via Zambrero’s global food relief partner, Stop Hunger Now.

The meals, which are made from rice, lentils and soy and invigorated with 23 essential vitamins and nutrients, will be given to the International Care Ministries (ICM) in the Philippines and will provide daily lunches for 2,250 children in ICM’s 75 kindergartens and home-based feeding for those suffering from malnutrition.

Dr Sam Prince said, “Malnutrition is a growing global epidemic so it is vital that those who have the means join together to fight world hunger. At Zambrero we are so grateful to our loyal customers and Plate 4 Plate Meal Packing volunteers as every burrito brought and meal packed means one more belly sufficiently filled and we are one step closer to ending world hunger.”

In the Philippines 22% go to bed hungry at least once a week so the 353,376 meals packed during the 2016 Meal Packing Event in Australia this year will make a significant difference in reducing this alarmingly high statistic.

Zambrero is also committed to tackling hunger on home soil as over 43,000 Australians are still being turned away from charities empty handed every month due to a lack of food. For every retail product sold at Zambrero restaurants, one meal is donated to Foodbank, Australia’s largest food relief organisation, and distributed to someone in need.
